When Instagram keeps telling you the password is incorrect, stop guessing and reset it with a code sent to your email or phone. If that code never arrives, someone may have changed your login details, and Instagram has a separate route for hacked accounts.
Reset your password
A reset gives you a new password you know is right, instead of trying the old one again and again. Start in the Instagram app on your iPhone or Android.
1. Get to the login screen
If another account is already open, tap your profile at the bottom right, then the drop-down arrow next to your username at the top. Tap Add Instagram account, then Log in to existing Instagram account. If you are not signed in at all, you will see the login page straight away; tap Use another profile to get to the login fields.
2. Ask for a reset code
The login fields take your username, email address or phone number. Instead of typing a password, tap Forgot password? under the login button. Instagram asks to find your account by phone number. If you would rather use your email, tap Find by email or username, enter it and tap Continue. Instagram emails you a code that gets you back into your account.
3. If the code doesn’t arrive
The next screen says a code was sent to your email. If it never shows up, tap Get a new code to send it again, or tap Try another way to get it as a text message instead. Try both the email and the phone number before you move on.
- Tap
- Forgot password?
- Find by email or username
- Continue
- Try another way
Check if a hacker took over
If neither the email nor the text message works, someone may have got into your account and changed the email address or phone number linked to it. That is why the codes go somewhere you can’t see them.
Open a web browser such as Safari and search for instagram account hacked. Tap My Instagram was hacked, then enter your username, or a phone number or email address that used to be linked to your account. Instagram then walks you through recovering the account on your own.
- Tap
